Earlier this week, Russian fighter jets intercepted and collided with the rear propeller of a US drone in international airspace approximately fifty miles off the coast of Crimea. Remote operators were forced to bring the MQ-9 Reaper down in the Black Sea. Close encounters between US and Russian aircraft, initiated by both countries, have been a common challenge since the onset of the Cold War but crashes caused by intercepts are rare.
