Katrina vanden Heuvel: I come from Zohran Land. I bring joy to this city where National Guardsmen prowl.
Zohran Mamdani is a candidate we endorsed. We endorse The Nation. We endorsed Bernie Sanders in 2016 and in 2020. And if you believe Bernie Sanders lost, I have something to tell you. He’s changed the narrative, the political alignment, in the same way Henry Wallace did. Maybe even more so because he did it inside the Democratic Party, which is a different discussion.
But Zohran yesterday showed his governing as a democratic socialist. When he sat in front of a camera, and spoke about Netanyahu as a war criminal, and said that the city couldn’t do anything that he had explored, but the federal government could with the ICC—that is an alignment. That is a change in political force. And he’s relevant today because we’re going to talk about that vision thing.
