This commentary examines the challenges to the international community arising from Russia’s use of information and psychological warfare. In particular, the author discusses 1) what psychological warfare is and why it is important to combat psychological attacks; 2) Russia’s concept of information security, which aims to protect strategically important information, protect against information from abroad that could have a negative effect on the country and to promote patriotism and Russian values; 3) the role that information warfare tactics play, and have played, in the Kremlin’s foreign policy, particularly toward Ukraine in the period between 2014-2015 and Estonia in 2007; and …read more
