Rearmament of the Russian Black Sea Fleet serves political rather than military purposes

The Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Viktor Chirkov stated that Russia carried out a programme of building new patrol ships and submarines for the Black Sea Fleet based in Ukraine. However, this is rather a bluff, and, in general, the main task of this fleet is not so much to protect Russian interests in the Black Sea as political influence on the situation in Ukraine.
