China’s Xi Jinping Tightens His Hold on Communist Party

A meeting of several hundred of the party’s most senior members on Thursday conferred upon Communist leader Xi Jinping an arcane designation, declaring him the “core” of the party’s leadership. The term was used in the past for Mao Zedong and two of his successors but not Mr. Xi’s immediate predecessor.
