Despite failure of the Hungarian referendum on 2 October 2016 due to low turnout Prime Minister Viktor Orban triumphed and quickly announced constitutional changes regarding migration. Contrary to general account of the result his government has succeeded in three areas: internal politics, European affairs and demographic policy.
Only 43 per cent voters showing at the polls brought about stunning 98 per cent result confirming Hungarian government cultural and demographic policy. Even though it was not legally binding the referendum will have significant impact on Hungarian and European political debate.
