Separating Ukraine’s numerous problems into coherent strands is the work of a lifetime: Does corruption cause economic self-destruction, or economic malaise cause corruption? Why does Ukraine’s economy struggle on when other, similarly-sized countries, equally distant from communism, prosper? Why is “politician” a well-established by-word for “thief”?
